Comprising a finely painted Russian icon of The Mother of God of Three Joys. Egg tempera on gesso on gold leaves. The offered icon clearly illustrates the heavy influence of Western art on Russian iconography. The story regarding the prototype of this miracle working image states that at the beginning of the 18th century it was brought to Moscow from Italy. There a troubled woman heard a voice telling her to seek out the image and pray before it. She did so and was granted "Three Joys." The offered image was obviously influenced by the famous painting by Raphael titled 'The Madonna della Sedia." Very finely painted and with extensive gilt highlighting similar to icons painted in the workshop of Ivan Malyshev. Excellent condition.
