Christian Orthodox icon of the "Kazan Mother of God" with a silver *oklad*

Icon dating to the first half of the 19th century; Vologda, Russia. Tempera, gold leaf, and gesso on a wooden panel; two inset end-splines (battens) are present.

Figures depicted on the icon's borders include: on the left, Saint Alexandra the Martyr and Saint Sergius of Radonezh; on the right, the Holy Princes Boris and Gleb. It features a substantial openwork silver *oklad* with ornamentation executed using forging and chasing techniques. Visible through the cutout in the *oklad* is a garment (*rubashka*) embroidered with beads, river pearls, and glass bugle beads.

The silver bears the Vologda city assay mark (1836) and the "84" standard (875/1000 purity); the assayer's mark in Cyrillic "P.K." (P.L. #312); and the maker's mark in Cyrillic "Zuev" (Ivan Zuev; P.L. #337).

Dimensions: 12 3/4” x 11 1/4” (32.5 x 28.5 cm).

Condition: Very good; minor dents on the edges of the silver *oklad* and signs of age. Provenance: Private collection, USA.

Христианская, Православная икона ,,Казанской Божией Матери” в серебряном окладе.

Икона 1я половина 19-го века Вологда, Россия. Темпера, сусальное золото, левкас на

деревянной основе, врезаны две торцевые шпонки, тыльная сторона иконы обтянута

бархатом.

На полях иконы выполнены предстоящие: слева Св. Мученица Александра и Св.

Преподобный Сергий Радонежский; справа св. Князья Борис и Глеб. Массивный

прорезной серебряный оклад, орнамент которого выполненный в технике ковки и чеканки.

В районе прорези оклада помещена расшитая бисером, речным жемчугом и стеклярусом

рубашка.

Серебро имеет пробирное клеймо 84-й пробы (серебро 875/1000), города Вологды 1836 год, пробиръер Кириллицей ,,П.К” (П. Л. #312), клеймо мастера Кириллицей ,,Зуев” Иван Зуев (П.Л. #337)

Размеры: 12 3/4” x 11 1/4” (32.5 x 28.5 см.)

Состояние: очень хорошее, имеются небольшие вмятины на торцах серебряного оклада, следы времени.
