19th century, Russian icon of Archangel Michael, central Russia. Egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on wood. Kovcheg, two splints in the back.

The icon depicts Michael as the chief captain of the heavenly armies, crowned and riding upon a winged horse. He holds censer, Gospel, and a lance. A long trumpet extends from his mouth, and a rainbow above his head. Michael is shown defeating Satan. At upper left corner is Christ Immanuel before Hetimasia, the prepared altar which is also symbolic throne of Christ.
